VoxLib VOX For Skype

VoxLib have announced their VOX service for Skype that allows you to make calls using your Skype account from your cell phone.

VOX for Skype will not accure any extra charges from your cell carrier as it operates via your local minutes account rather than a data plan. Setup sounds a little complicated, but here goes.

Firstly you need to download a plugin and install it on your computer. Skype also needs to be running all the time for VOX to work. There are 2 options with VOX for Skype; VOX via SkypeIn and VOX via SMS.

To use VOX for Skype:

  1. The user would call their SkypeIn number.
  2. VOX for Skype recognises your call.
  3. It then gives you access to your Skype account to make a cheap long distance call.
  4. You can also get access to voicemails.

To use VOX via SMS:

  1. The user sends a text message to the VoxLib SMS gateway.
  2. The VoxLib SMS gateway sends another SMS to the VOX plugin on your computer.
  3. SkypeOut then calls you and connects your call.
  4. You can then send a message containing ‘online’ and VOX will send you a message containing your Skype contact list, which then allows you to make a Skype call from your mobile.

All I can say is that the service might give you a few headaches as well as cheap calls. Check out the diagrams for further information on how it works.
