VoIP gains strength in the U.S

The residential telephone market in the US has accepted VoIP as a telephony option that is here to stay. A staggering 9 million families in the US have at least one person who uses VoIP and increasingly more and more families are making use of more than one VoIP provider.

Microsoft has made impressive inroads in the client-based VoIP services with 1.1 million households using its services. Skype leads the market with 2.1 million families as active members of its service. What was impressive was that almost 50% of those who had switched to VoIP had stopped using PSTN. Client-based VoIP is the solution of choice for many people who use only VoIP service such as that provided by Yahoo Messenger and Skype.
