VoIP 911 Calls Standard Approved
There has been a lot of talk recently about problems with VoIP and emergency 911 calls.
However, the boards of directors of the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) in the United States has this week approved a standard that will see VoIP calls routed through a traditional exchange before connecting with the local dispatch center.
The new standard is not required by law as yet, many leading VoIP service providers have implemented some of it’s parts in the last few months. The announcement of the new VoIP standard for E911 calls is cited as a major breakthrough that could eventually lead to mass-market adoption.
“We can’t stress enough the importance of implementing 911 in a coordinated and standardized approach,†said NENA’s government affairs director, Patrick Halley.
