UTStarcom GF200 Hybrid WiFi / VoIP Phone
UTStarcom’s new GF200 hybrid WiFi / VoIP phone is set to reduce phone bills by allowing customers to make calls on cell networks and through VoIP technology over WiFi networks. The GF200 is set for a release later this year, no price has been set as yet.
The GF200 works by connecting to both GSM and WiFi networks simultaneously, which then allows a call to be routed over either network at the touch of a button. This might not sound like much to many people, but if you live in an area with good WiFi coverage you will stand to save a lot of money. Home users also stand to benefit. With so many homeowners now installing their own wireless LANs, phones such as the GF200 will start saving homes money by utilizing VoIP instead of cell networks.
Cell companies are somewhat concerned about the rise of the WiFi / VoIP hybrid phone, so don’t expect any of the cell networks to start offering one as part of their call plans. However, there is little doubt that this new breed of phone will gain traction with consumers keen to save money.
