UK and Ireland lead world in WiFi hotspots per capita

It’s not often we get to say this, but the UK and Ireland are actually leading the way in something!  No, not football or number of text messages sent.  A report from the UK’s Ofcom (Office of Communications) states that the UK and Ireland leads the rest of the world in the number of WiFi hotspots per capita with 18 per 100 people.

But these figures fail to tell the whole story.  They may lead the world in terms of hotspots per capita, but the USA still has more wireless hotspots than anywhere else in the world.  There just isn’t enough of them!

Surprisingly Japan came in at third lowest with just 5.3 hotspots per capita, but perhaps the fact that Japan is thoroughly saturated with 3G networks the apparent neglect of wifi hotspots is nothing to worry about.

Large scale wireless networks are being deployed in Westminster and Manchester with more in the pipeline.
