Taipei Turns To VoIP For Government Offices & Schools

Wow, could I use any more Ts in that title?  I was beginning to worry.

Taipei has officially moved over to VoIP with all the government offices and 234 schools in the city now using Voice over IP technology to make and receive phone calls.  The move means that  the city government should save approximately $12,340 in phone call charges on a monthly basis, which is quite a saving.  Whether this will be passed back to the public in the form of reduced taxation or improved services remains to be seen though.

The VoIP system used was setup by association of local businesses and organizations called IP Phone Open Exchange (IPOX) who aim to promote the deployment of wireless networks and VoIP throughout Taiwan with the help of TeleSynergy Research, based in Sunnyvale, California.

Taiwan has been renowned for years as a hotbed of technological advancement.  Recently Taipei successfully launched the world’s largest wireless publicly accessible WiFi network.  Hopefully other governments and large corporations are watching this development and learning from it.  There are savings to be earned with VoIP.
