SHSU Dump Cisco For Open Source Asterisk

Sam Houston State University is moving away from their current setup of Cisco CallManager IP PBXs and Nortel Meridian PBXs to a completely open source IP PBX system based around Asterisk. All 6,000 members of staff and students will now use the Asterisk system for all their calls, voicemail and PSTN gateway functionality. And the main driving force behind such a large scale move? Cost.

Asterisk is certainly making a few waves in IP Telephony circles, especially because it is open source and based on SIP. It has a lengthy set of features, including e911 support. As well as it’s cost, being so feature-rich would have made the move across slightly easier.

Who’s next? Who knows. But Asterisk is on the rise, that’s for sure.
