Samsung SPH-P9000: Integrated Voice & Data Communication Via WiMax / EVDO
Convergence, it’s aterm that has been thrown about for years and years but only now are actually starting to see some evidence of it happening. Take the Samsung SPH-P9000, a brand spanking new device that is capable of both voice and data communication over a WiMax connection. Now, while WiMax is not yet widely available in the USA now, Sprint have made public their plans to roll out a WiMax network in Q4 2007. Good news.
So what is the SPH-P9000? It is a PDA-style device that comes with integrated WiMax and EVDO connectivity, allowing you to hop onto a hi-speed network where available. It runs on Microsoft XP, which opens the doors to running your softphone of choice. But you are not just limited to making calls, you get a QWERTY keyboard that also allows you to quickly email and chat via your IM network of choice.
With a 30GB hard drive you can store and listen to a range of music or music, edit documents etc. The possibilities are quite endless. And it weighs just over one pound.
No prices have been set for the SPH-P9000 yet, nor has there been any details on availability outside South Korea where WiMax and WiBro networks are already established. But hopefully devices such as these that make voice and data communication easy will crop up here soon to take advantage of WiMax networks when they are eventually deployed.
