RTX PORTALphone Dual-mode VoIP Phone

RTX America have announced the release of their new internet-enabled cordless phone called the RTX PORTALphone. The PORTALphone will allow users to connect to the internet and view content on a color screen.

The PORTALphone is dual-mode, bundling VoIP telephony with traditional landline phone capability. It is also able to connect to the internet and display information such as stock prices, news, address books, emails, contact lists etc. RTX will ship the PORTALphone will a basestation which simultaneously connects to the internet via a broadband connection, while simultaneously connecting to a traditional landline. The PORTALphone supports VoIP telephony based on SIP and also the traditional POTS standard.

The RTX PORTALphone is due to ship in spring 2006 and will be available through a range of stores and service providers.
