Ottawa makes a move on VOIP
The
Maxime Bernier, minister of industry at a luncheon meeting on Wednesday stated that VOIP services would no longer be controlled. He further said that the VOIP market has less barriers for entry therefore it was wise to halt its regulation. He added that in today’s competitive sector, it is not necessary to regulate some of the selected companies when the others are allowed to offer the services at the prices they desire.
The previous barriers to the VOIP services was so far restricting some of the existing phone carriers in the prices of their own VOIP services in order to compete with the specialized services like Vonage Canada. One such company that was affected by the previous regulation includes the Bell Canada Enterprises Inc. Now with the new deregulation all the VOIP service providers are allowed to price their package according to the way they want.
A spokesperson from the Canadian Radio Telecommunications Commission commented that the deregulation will display its outcome very soon. A circular is known to be issued for its implementation. Services like
