Orange Launches Converged VoIP + Mobile Calling
Subscribers of Orange in the UK and some European countries can now make both VoIP and mobile calls from a single dual-mode handset, using a service called the Unique phone. The phones operate on WLAN (Wireless LAN) at home and a mobile network otherwise. Calls from home to landline phones and other Orange mobiles are VoIP-based and free. A single phone number works for either type of calling.
The service requires a unit called the Orange Livebox, so that home-based Wi-Fi calls can be made, as well as a broadband Internet connection. Calls can be handed over from one network to the other, which is great for those of you on the go. Just keep in mind that you are paying for calls started in mobile mode, but not if you started the call at home and then switched over to cellular mode when you leave home.
Currently, only three manufacturers’ phones are supported (Motorola, Nokia, Samsung), and specific phones ast that. Read Pocket Lint UK for more details.
