Nokia and Skype partner on N800 Internet Tablet

SkypeNokia and Skype announced a partnership at CES that will see Skype embedded in Nokia’s N800 Internet Tablet.

The previous version, the N770 Internet Tablet, was largely ignored and considered a geeky toy. But when Nokia announced support for Jabber and Google Talk it started to gain some traction as a proper phone.

The introduction of the updated N800 Internet Tablet brings support for miniSD cards, a faster processor and more memory. However, the standout addition is support for Skype, which will need to be downloaded and installed by the user. Skype will connect to the internet via WiFi allowing users to call Skype contacts and landlines.
There has been a great deal of discussion about the prospect of Skype for mobiles phones. The demand is there but Skype are having problems developing for so many architectures as well as opposition from carriers worried about losing their lucrative mobile business.
