Nokia 6136 GSM WiFi / VoIP Phone
The market for these dual-mode hybrid phones is really hotting up! Nokia have announced the new Nokia 6136 phone which will combine standard cell phone functionality with VoIP technology.
Nokia are marketing the 6136 towards the corporate environment and those with access to widespread WiFi networks. Obviously there are considerable benefits with such a phone, use it as an ordinary cell phone on the road and flip it into VoIP mode when in the WiFi network and start saving with your VoIP calls.
The Nokia 6136 also comes with a nice 1.3 megapixel camera and will be made available on the Orange network to start with, but will be made available across other networks after. If you are a student or work in an area well served by WiFi, then the Nokia 6136 may be the phone for you.
Clearly there is a large scale convergence at work here with cell and VoIP functionality melding into one neat package. I can’t see these kinds of phones really mushrooming in terms of mainstream popularity for some time yet, or until WiFi networks are available on a wider scale outside businesses. But I guess if you have a home network, you could stand to make significant savings.
