New Philips + Netgear Cordless PC-less Skype-Certified VoIP Phones
Wow, is that a mouthful. Not just Skype/ VoIP phones, but cordless and computer-less as well. Netgear and loads of other networking hardware manufacturers have been revelling in the VoIP aftermarket with all the handsets they’ve been releasing. But this is the first one that is cordless, and it doesn’t need a computer – just a broadband connection and a base station. And not wanting the hardware makers to have all the fun, Philips decided to get in on the act as well, offering their own phone. [via About Skype]
The Netgear phone will be to market sooner, since it’s being shown at an international press meeting on Sept 1st. The Philips phone will be available for the 2006 holiday season but was announced in January.
Philips also has VoIP videophone, and had announced VoIP baseband chips for cordless phones late last year. Of course, if you prefer old-school, you could try this Skype phone. But I’m waiting for nothing short of the communicator device that you see on pinned to the crew of the Star Trek Enterprise.
