MS Office gets more VoIP-friendly

Steve Ballmer predicts that within a decade all corporate communication will be web-based. Microsoft wants to be ready for it when the time comes and hence it has initiated tests on new computer server software aimed at corporates. This software will allow businesses to make web-based phone calls using Office. Microsoft’s move is significant considering that many corporates are shifting toward VoIP for business communication.

The Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 will be released in the first quarter of 2007 and will help Microsoft establish itself in the business telephone market. Other companies in the fray include Cisco and IBM. 2,500 lucky companies will get to use the software during the testing phase.
