London: Not So Hot For VoIP

A survey carried out by AirMagnet has revealed that three quarters of all the wireless hotspots in London city center are currently unable to support calls made by Voice over IP.   That’s not great considering London is one of the world’s foremost financial districts where people are on the move and would like to take advantage of the benefits offered by VoIP.

But all is not lost for Londoners wanting to make use of VoIP.  Westminster borough has announced plans to deploy a large wireless network that will allow VoIP calls, while The Cloud have also been expanded their wireless network in London.

After a quick scan it seems that the AirMagnet survey was carried out on private open networks such as those operated by coffee shops, restaurants and bars where technical knowhow may not be available or capable to give softphones and new WiFi phones network access.  However, with a gradual shift towards council operated wireless networks these problems should be ironed out over time, paving the way for mass market adoption of Voice over IP.
