Just how does Skype get round firewalls?

SkypeWe’ve been hearing more and more chatter about the future of VoIP security recently. And rightly so, VoIP might be a hot topic but it seems that there is still a lot of work to do on securing VoIP calls. Vishing (VoIP phishing) is on the rise, corruption at remote call centers is rife and there is a general feeling that unless the issue of security is properly dealt with VoIP could be in for a tough ride. Afterall, it’s much more difficult to hack an old PSTN line.

So with all that said, how do VoIP clients, Skype in particular, get round firewalls? That’s a decent question, but rather than me blabbering on about it aimlessly you ought to head over to this piece at Heisse Security that goes into detail.

If you happen to be a system or network administrator this will be a very useful read indeed!
