Howto: Setup Skype For SMS
Skype recently released 2.5 Beta for Mac OS X, which included a few new features including the ability to send SMS to your contact’s mobile phones. I really like this feature because it is so cheap compared to my normal rate as set by contract.
Setting it up is fairly easy. You are able to send messages from your Skype account, ie. they will arrive from your account name. However, I prefer to have my contacts see me as my mobile number when a message comes through. Here’s how you can set it up.
- Go to Skype > Preferences.
- Select the SMS tab.
- Select ‘My mobile phone number’ instead of ‘My Skype Name’.
- Enter in your mobile number including your national dial code and hit enter.
- Skype will now send a message to your phone.
- Pick up that message and enter the code.
- That’s it!
Now all you have to do when you want to send a message instead of make a call or start a chat is to right click the contact and select Send SMS.
