Howto: Fix Skype Screeches

While the call quality on Skype is typically high, especially when calling from PC - PC, there are occasions when Skype screeches. These high pitched electronic noises are not what you want to subject your ears to, so here’s how to fix it.

1. Update - Go to Skype’s website and download the very latest stable release. If you have been running a cutting edge beta version, uninstall it and then install the latest stable release.
2. Setup - What are you using to make your Skype calls? Are you using a headphone and speaker setup? Is the person you are talking to using a headset to talk into and speakers for sound output. If either, think about increasing the distance between the input and output sources (headset and speakers) to reduce feedback.
3. Control your voice levels - Try and keep the volume of your voice as stable as possible. In other words, refrain from shouting.
4. Get new equipment - Think about getting yourself a Skype-certified headset and use it for both input and output.
