Global VoIP Traffic Up 35% In 2004

Global VoIP traffic in 2004 grew by 35% according to figures from Tele Geography, a market research firm specializing in telecoms. VoIP traffic is expected to exceed past 42 billion minutes for 2005, which comes to approximately 16% of the total international voice communications market.

Brazil and Nigeria are leading the growth in VoIP usage - Brazil’s usage grew 112% and Nigeria’s grew 103%. The third fastest growth market was Bangladesh with 97%, followed by the Dominican Republic which saw an 81% increase. Latin America has been the single largest destination region for VoIP calls since 2001 with 36% of the world market in 2004. Inside the Latin American market Mexico is the biggest receiver with 5.3 billion minutes of VoIP calls.
