Fiji Government to Encourage VoIP Service to Competition

With VoIP made unavoidable in Fiji it raised the question whether it should be licensed solely to the selected telecom service providers or made widely approachable for competition within the country.

The matter had been discussed among the Government and the stakeholders from the communications industry recently this week in an attempt to launch and elucidate its latest VoIP policy.

A full one-day intensive workshop on VoIP was arranged at the Tanoa Plaza in order to discuss and explain the Government plans about the new operation and its licensing. The government is showing signs of opening up the VoIP market while the local telecommunication companies believe this to be otherwise.

Ivan Fong, the managing corporate planning of Telecom Fiji, which dominates the telecommunication regime, explained that new innovations in the telecom sector have been evolving each and everyday and their networks have been upgraded accordingly with the technological changes and updates.
