Dimdim: Web Conferencing In Your Browser
Dimdim is a startup with a difference. Aside from it’s business plan, notably absent from many of their peers, Dimdim offers users of their technology to make voice and video conferences from within a web browser. Currently Dimdim is only available to Windows IE users, but they are working on expanding support for Mac OS X and Linux.
It also makes it possible to view and present documents to attendees of the video conference, much like the next version of iChat to be released with Mac OS X Leopard. That said, Dimdim is not without competition. Skype, MSN and AIM are already established with many thousands of users. Dimdim is a hosted solution which resides on the company server, the key to how they plan to generate revenue in the future. While Dimdim will be a free service to the user, any support required by the host will be paid for.
According to TechCrunch the software runs as well as you would expect in it’s current state; “resolution on the shared screen isn’t all I wish it was but lag time was very low.” I think the future could be rosy for this startup. They’ve got a solid service that is going to sit very nicely with businesses looking to take advantage of video conferencing. Afterall it is much more cost-effective to host a video conference that fly.
Interestingly Dimdim say that they It’s great to see a Web 2.0 startup integrating VoIP so tightly like this. I hope they go far.
