BT tops 1 million VoIP customers
BT have announced that they have reached 1 million customers of it’s BT Broadband Talk and BT Softphone before their target time, but there is no breakdown on the split between the services. Furthermore, there is no disclosure on how many of the customers are paying.
However, let’s look at the broader picture. Even though there is no chance that every one of those 1 million accounts represent an active paying customer, the very fact that there are so many users signed up and evidently aware of VoIP is a positive sign for internet telephony in the UK.
I wouldn’t concentrate too much on the number of users, nor would I ponder over the percentage of paying customers. The single most important aspect of this announcement is that it is indicative of a broad and growing acceptance of VoIP technology.
BT are facing stiff competition in the VoIP marketplace in the UK from ISPs such as Orange who are now offering a mobile / broadband / VoIP package.
