Audit by Scanit Shows VoIP Vulnerability
A recent audit by Scanit, a top security company which audits IT systems has revealed that businesses and call centres which are using VoIP are putting their customer’s confidentiality at risk. This amounts to 70% of the calls which are vulnerable to hackers.
Most outrageous is the fact that Scanit proved they were able to pick up tone-dial PIN numbers to access services such as phone banking which further confirms past concerns on the safeness of phone banking even as it is done on the VoIP network. Other than that, information of confidential corporate deals and private conversation are also likely to be exposed.
The reason such a breach in security is occurring is due to miscommunication between the system integrator or vendors and the IT staffs of the company using VoIP. On one hand the vendors are more focused on providing more functionality to the system expecting the IT staffs from that company to handle all security implementation while on the other hand the IT staffs assume their networks were already protected. This causes the network to run unprotected with no encryption whatsoever. A better solution would be to have the IT staffs and the vendors work hand-in-hand to bring a more secured network with better functionality.
