8×8: Upgraded Packet8 Softalk 1.5 With Enhanced H.264 Video Codec

8×8 have announced that an upgrade to version 1.5 of their video and voice Packet8 Softtalk software with improved video using H.264.

Softtalk version 1.5 incorporates the H.264 protocol, a standard next generation video compression codec that significantly improves the videoconferencing capabilities of Softtalk. Apple have previously used the H.264C codec to great effect in iChat. Customers can now participate in Softtlk – Softtalk video conferences with up to 6 simultaneous attendees.

Other improvements with this upgrade include improved contact management that now has support for importing and exporting Outlook contacts. Packet8 have also implemented “zero-touch” configuration for connected headphones and web cams.
